Chapter 13 RR and Comic RR

Chapter 13 and Argument: Beyond Pro and Con RR

by Cristina Aguirre
Chapter 13 talked about argumentation and persuasion, and how we can use them to create a good strong essay. In this chapter we learned that narrating, contrasting arguments, giving examples and describing in detail will help your essay be a strong essay with a good argumentation. Chapter 13 gave a good detailed explanation of the difference between argumentation and persuasion.  The book explains that “argumentation relies on sound reasoning, compelling evidence, and logic to convince readers" and "Persuasion appeals to emotions, values, and beliefs"(571).

The chapter also talks about the three types of reader that there are. There are supportive, wavering and hostile. The supportive reader agrees with your points, and pretty much agrees with what you have to say.  A wavering reader understands your points, but does not quite know how to feel about them.  A hostile reader is someone is the most difficult to persuade, they strongly oppose to your ideas.

The structure of an essay was also discussed in this chapter. There are three elements that should be included in an argument essay: a claim, or thesis, supporting details which will be facts, personal experiences and research.  Throughout your essay you want to use induction reasoning which means show specific evidence that leads to the point that you want to get to.

This week we also read Argument: Beyond Pro and Con, which is a comic talking about argumentation essays, like Chapter 13, it talks about making your essay a strong one by using facts and evidence that back up your writing.  Jonathan and Liz, the main characters of the comic, go on an adventure to figure out how they can write a stronger augmentation essay, and its structure. The comic also talked about the structure and the elements that go with it. Jonathan and Liz compare this to a sandwich.  The comic was fun to read and easier to learn from.
